Advertising Standards Bureau To Review Puppetry Of The Penis Billboard After Complaint

THERE'S no nudity or swearing but a poster advertising Puppetry of the Penis 3D will face a review by the Advertising Standards Board (Australia).

The billboard at the Twelfth Night Theatre at Bowen Hills has prompted one complaint with a letter stating: "We teach our children to behave civilly and use words appropriately. This billboard offends against this dignity by thrusting the male genital part into the public arena for entertainment and laughs."

The concerned community member said the shape of the font used on the billboard to promote the new 3D show could be perceived as suggestive and could negatively impact the community.

The complaint also included a request the advertisement be removed.

Puppetry of the Penis founder Simon Morley was notified about the complaint today and said they would fully cooperate with the Advertising Standards Board.

Puppetry of the Penis founder Simon Morley was notified about the complaint today and said they would fully cooperate with the Advertising Standards Board.
``I just think people see the word penis and get very defensive,'' Mr Morley said.
``We just did a five month tour in the UK and there wasn't one complaint.''
He said he designed the current billboard, which was more subdued compared to those used previously.

``It was a take on those old-style shock horror films, which is what we're trying to achieve with it, a bit of humour mixed with something scary.''

As the complaint raised issues under a section of the code of ethics which relates to children, it will be referred to the board of the Advertising Standards Bureau.

They will meet at a later date to make their decision.
