There is nothing quite so liberating and life-affirming as swimming without clothes and the wonderful sensation of the water over your whole body. In fact, the swimsuit is the most pointless item of clothing invented – it neither keeps you warm nor dry! Modern designs also serve to draw attention to the very parts of the body that costumes intend to hide.

We’ve all got one - and it wasn’t designed to be wrapped up in clothes 24/7. Yet cultural issues often mean that simple human nudity is treated with shame, or seen as provocative or dirty. In fact, it’s all good. We all benefit – mentally, physically and psychologically - from shedding our clothes. It’s fun, liberating, relaxing, healthy, de-stressing, bringing a sense of well-being, and an escape from daily life and social convention.

You can skinny dip alone, but it’s better with others. We know that newcomers can be hesitant or even embarrassed about being nude in front of others – especially people they know - for the first time, but it quickly becomes normal to be naked among naked people. Poor body image is improved as no-one has a “perfect” body and we’re all different anyway. It is surprising how quickly confidence grows and self-consciousness fades.

Swimming Naked With Beluga Whales [Science]

These extraordinary pictures show a naked woman attempting to tame two beluga whales in a unique experiment. It was deemed necessary for Russian diver Natalia Avseenko, 36, to strip for the unusual assignment as marine experts believe belugas do not like to be touched by artificial material like diving suits. So Natalia bravely took the plunge into the sea as the temperature in the water touched minus 1.5 centigrade. The belugas, famed for the apparent way in which their faces are able to convey expressions, seemed to like the experience, frolicking for all they were worth. The taming of the belugas happened in the Murmansk Oblast region in the far north-west of Russia at the shore of the White Sea near the polar circle at a branch of the Utrish Dophinarium. An area of the sea is bordered to stop whales and dolphins getting out and instructors tame the mammals before they are transported to dolphinariums around the world. The whales pictured are named Nilma and Matrena. Belugas have a small hump on their heads used for echo-location and it was thought that there would be more chance of striking up a rapport or communicating with them without clothes on.

According to the Russian Emergency Service the average human could die if left in sub-zero temperature sea water for just five minutes. However, Natalia spent ten minutes 40 seconds in the water with no obvious ill effects. A yoga practitioner, she used meditation techniques and was able to hold her breath for ten minutes underwater.

Swimmers' Bare Cheek Leaves Parents Fuming [Blast From The Past]

PARENTS are refusing to let their children swim in Levenshulme baths – because it’s being hired for naked male swimming sessions.

Over the past nine months the pool has been hired out on a Thursday evening for private naturist group called Naked Swim.

The group hires one of the two pools and is given use of the saunas, while regular public adults-only swimming takes place in the second pool.

But now local mums have learned about the sessions, some want them stopped.

They say their problem is not that the sessions are for gay men – but that it is inappropriate that people are bathing in the nude in a public pool.

Manchester council has moved to reassure people that the sessions pose no hygiene or privacy risk but some mums are so concerned that they have pulled their children out of swimming lessons at the baths in protest.

Elaine Howarth said she had complained to staff at the swimming pool, but was told they could not see what the fuss was about.

She said: "I’m all for people having their own get-togethers, but why do they have to be naked? It just doesn’t seem right," she said.

All the local schools use the baths for their swimming lessons but most of the mothers I’ve been speaking to are now not going to allow their children to go anymore. It’s horrible to think about." Another mum, Lynne Mills, said she had pulled her son out of his lessons.

She is now considering using another pool.

She said: "I thought this was a joke when I first heard about it. This is a community pool used by OAPs and children. I am concerned about the hygiene aspect – they don’t let children in pools without wearing clothes, so why should it be different for adults?"

"We have told my son that we think he’s too good for those lessons now. Someone from Levenshulme baths phoned me this week to ask if he would be coming back and I told them no and the reason why not. All the mums I know are doing the same. I’m gutted about it because I’d like to support the local pool, but it just doesn’t seem right."

A spokeswoman for Manchester City council said: "This private session has been running since June 2007 with absolutely no problems and the public can be reassured there are no issues surrounding hygiene or privacy.

"This is no less sanitary than bathing with a swimsuit and our pools are well maintained, filtered and chlorinated to maintain high standards of cleanliness for all swimming sessions.

"The group meets in a completely private session in pool two, which is closed to other members of the public, and does not affect other visitors in any way.

"Manchester City Council is totally committed to equality and does not accept discrimination of any kind. The pool is available to hire by any groups regardless of their faith, race, gender or sexuality."

The baths have received two direct complaints about the group – for gay people – one written and one verbal.

Jeni Quirke, of the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, said: , told the MEN: "Naked Swim is a naturist group and whether it is for gay men or not is irrelevant."

"It should not be considered any different from a heterosexual naturist group. It’s all above board, it’s not seedy, it’s just a social networking group."

The organisers of Naked Swim were so far unavailable for comment.

A MEETING is being held by the Friends of Levenshulme, to discuss the stage in their campaign to push for regeneration in the district.

Residents are asked to go along to plan how to organise a hustings event before the local elections on May 1.

Bedford Naturist Swim IS BACK [Event]

Bedford Naturist Swim host a genuine naturist swim and sauna leisure evenings, 4 times a year at the Bedford Oasis Beach Pool for members of British Naturism (BN) and members of other bona-fide naturist clubs and swims along with their guests. All are welcome but we ask for a valid BN or Club Membership card to be shown at the door for at least one person in your group.

All visitors should be aware that this is a naturist event and swimwear is not required, nor acceptable during these periods. We make exceptions to this for ladies when necessary and bikini bottoms are allowed at such times.

This event is an all ticket event with payment in advance so that we know the numbers attending. We offer discounts on multiple purchases. The prices are as follows:
1 Ticket = £15
2 Tickets = £10 Each
3 Or more tickets = £9 Each
Children under the age of 16 = £1 Each

You may pay either by Credit Card online or make a PayPal transfer.

Please arrive before 8 pm and provide your proof of payment and a naturist/BN club card for your group.

The cafeteria will be open throughout the swim and is situated at the side of the pool. There is also the use of the Sauna/Steam Rooms.
