[Topfree] Artist Holly Van Voast, In Court Again After Stripping In New York's St Patrick's Cathedral

Ativist Holly Van Voast was hauled back in court yesterday for her latest stunt – going [topfree] in St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York.

After facing the judge fully dressed, Van Voast was dismissed thanks to a 1992 state appellate court ruling which states women are allowed to go [topfree] in public.

The 46-year-old then exited the court and promptly exposed her breasts to the waiting media.

The photographer and performance artist has so far displayed her wares at Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty and on the Staten Island Ferry.

Having filmed her latest stunt, Von Voast informed the New York Daily News: “I want to have a reality show. Nothing works like t***.”

Sporting a mop of unruly blonde hair, a drawn on moustache and frequently bare breasts, Van Voast often performs under her transgender alter-ego Harvey Van Toast.

Harvey, Van Voast claims, was conceived to draw attention to the need to protect art and to entertain the public.

She told DNAinfo: "This is what New York is begging for right now — something kind of funny, a little outrageous. Something that blows your mind.”

In this video, Van Voast's alter-ego, Harvey, visits the Staten Island Ferry and the Empire State Building:

Crash Course: Body Image [Body Image]

Here is a video about body image from the founder (Annie) of the website Stop Hating Your Body on Tumblr. Stop Hating Your Body is updated daily with many great and sometime moving testimonies of real men and women who have battled with their body image. On the website, Annie states the reason for starting it:

I started Stop Hating Your Body on Oct 12, 2010 after taking a photo in my underwear with the words “START A REVOLUTION! STOP HATING YOUR BODY!”

I wanted to create a space where people could express themselves about body image, where all sorts of different body types, age groups, ethnicity, beliefs, can unite over one thing: the desire to be happy, the desire to love themselves completely.

I have a low tolerance for bullying or cruelty, if I catch it, depending on what was said I might give someone a warning or I might just immediately block them from the site. Of course I can’t see all that goes on, so I also rely on people to report any harassment and I will do the same.

Stop Hating Your Body Website (http://stophatingyourbody.tumblr.com/)

I understand that people have concerns about physical health in accordance to weight, but that does not justify criticizing, bullying, or shaming people for their bodies. If you are truly concerned that one is living an unhealthy lifestyle and it is showing, then show kindness, not judgment. I bring this up because there is constant scrutiny based on health, but I am here to say that one’s health or health lifestyle does not EVER justify bullying. I bring this up, because YES, some bodies you will see on this blog WILL be unhealthy, but that doesn’t give you the right to put them down. We are here to SUPPORT each other.

I cannot emphasize enough that this is NOT a health blog, this is a self-esteem blog, I am not a doctor, I am not equipped to answer questions about health, but hopefully I can be of some help in finding clarity about your body-image. So though, as a person, as Annie, I would hope that you are healthy and that you live a long and happy life, you are no less of a human being if you are unhealthy, whether it’s because of lifestyle choices or matters out of your control, you deserve respect, you deserve positive self-esteem.

Also understand that this is a space for EVERYONE, no matter what size, color, age, we’ve all suffered with body image issues, most of us anyway, and we are here to support each other; not to compare our bodies, not to see how many notes your post gets, not to judge each other. We are here to listen, to learn, to understand, that we all have our own battles and we are all human and deserve some respect.

This is a place of encouragement, a place to talk about body image, a place for feeling beautiful. No matter what you look like, what color, what gender, what size or however many “flaws”, healthy, not healthy, working on it, we are all human, we all deserve to be happy, we all deserve to love ourselves. With this blog you will see all kinds of REAL bodies, REAL people, REAL stories.

Please support this website by visiting it and telling others about it.

'Primitive' [Tribal Peoples and Cultures]

Is it so strange that some people don’t want to join the mainstream? http://www.survivalinternational.org

There are many different ways of living on this planet, who's to say their way is best?

Survival - iNAKED's Charity Of Choice

banner-logo.en
Survival is the worldwide movement for tribal peoples whose lives, lands and livelihoods are threatened.

Throughout Africa, Asia and beyond, tribal peoples face challenges to their land and welfare from mining, cattle ranchers, missionaries and other intruders bringing violence and disease.

For over 40 years, Survival have brought attention to their situations, supported their struggles and given them a platform to convey their message. We have supported court cases, launched massive media stories and carried out high-profile protests with great success.

Their work has led to the demarcation of tribal reserves, the abandonment of oil exploration projects and a far greater global awareness of the issue.

All this happens independently of governmental or corporate sponsorship, thanks to their supporters. They work towards a world where tribal peoples have their land rights respected, their human rights upheld and the opportunity to decide their futures.

It is the opinion of iNAKED, that the peoples that Survival represents are naturists in every sense of the word and it is only right to help these tribal people the best we can. Please visit the Survival website to find out how to support this charity and the tribal people.

My Nudist Philosophy... [Submitted Article]

BY NAKED ANDY

To be human is to have a human body. To be ashamed of one’s body is to be ashamed of being human.

Photo copyright Nor-Cal Photography 2010.

For longer than I can remember, I have preferred to be naked. There are photos of my siblings and me as children, in which they wear pajamas and I am naked. There is an old home movie of us splashing in a wading pool; they wear swimsuits and I am naked. Evidently, a sense of freedom and joy at feeling uninterrupted air or water all over my skin has always been a part of who I am.

As a young man, I sought out situations where nudity was readily accepted (nude beaches) or — even better — required (modeling for art classes, performing nude scenes in plays). I had a few close friends with whom I could be socially naked, but, for the most part, I needed permission or an excuse to get out of my clothes; “Hey, they’re paying me.”

My body has grown less pretty as I have aged. Well, so has my face. So has my hair. Does this mean I should cover my face, and wear a hat at all times? If anything, the changes in my body have deepened my understanding that nudity is not the exclusive domain of the young and beautiful. Nudity is the default setting for all of us. It’s wrong to let ourselves be bullied or shamed into taking the action of hiding behind clothing. A society in which individuals are free to be as dressed or undressed as they wish would be my ideal.

Having learned to be more honest and unabashed about my desire to be nude in daily life, I seize or create opportunities to be clothes-free regardless of what the expected “norm” might be. Because I think nakedness should be okay, I tend to push the envelope in the spirit of Be the Change. Most of my public nudity takes place where it is neither illegal nor unheard of…. but, yes, there’s some envelope-pushing going on there, too.

Whether among friends…

…or in a crowd of strangers…

… I believe that being non-sexually naked among clothed folk has the potential to nudge them toward body acceptance.

Many onlookers, in person and online seem to respond to nudity with strictly prurient interest or as if it were a freak show… and I can’t control that. I hope that eventually, through osmosis, SOME of them may come to think that a human body is a perfectly natural thing which doesn’t ALWAYS mean sex, and which need not be hidden from view.

I'm proud to be a guest blogger on iNAKED. My own blog is @ http://ihavenoprivateparts.tumblr.com/

Bodies Of Water - A Nude Dance Outdoor Workshop [Naturism]

A lakeside afternoon with a group of nude dancers taking a workshop with choreographer Eric Kupers. Free of their clothes everyone feels transformed and energized with spontaneity. The rhythms of nature flow through their bodies. Filmed at Folsom Lake in California. The whole video is too long to show here so I have created this much shortened version. -- My name is Nomad and I organize small group trips into nature where we get naked, then get creative with photography, videography and interacting with the environment. We are based in central California and are always looking for more people to join us on our adventures.

World's Lost Tribes [Tribal Peoples and Cultures]

f

Join extreme travellers Mark Anstice and Olly Steeds as they embark on unique expeditions into some of the most remote places on Earth.

Explorer, Mark and journalist Olly have spent months with two remarkable indigenous tribes in West Papua - the Kombai and the Mek - trekking high into uncharted highlands, seeking total immersion in isolated cultures with histories of tribal war, sorcery and witchcraft.

In this hugely different world, Brits Mark and Olly attempt to live off the land, exactly like their hosts. It's a hardcore challenge because not only do they have to learn how to survive on a largely unusual (and often unpalatable) diet, they must also work alongside the tribes, learn new languages and understand each tribe's rituals.

Join Mark and Olly in their incredible adventures as they make friends, and enemies, and learn the secrets of these primal societies.

US Discovery Travel Series following explorers Mark Anstice and Olly Steeds living with the Kombai Tribe. They are some of the worlds last hunter gatherers. They throw a huge sago grub festival - all is well until a feudal enemy turns up.

US Travel Channel Series following explorers Mark Anstice and Olly Steeds living with the Mek tribe in West Papua. The Mek are the some of the worlds oldest farmers but still dig with sticks. Much of their lives is very recognizable though, this is a clip of a young couple and their shotgun wedding.

We Want To Do The Full Montenegro! [Blast From The Past, Tavel]

This article was taken from Mail Online By Richard Webber (Last updated at 12:44 PM on 4th May 2009):

We want to do the full Montenegro! A nudist resort and a holiday letting business, two reasons why these British couples are banking on the Balkans

Eight years ago, Montenegro was still embroiled in the Balkan dispute, deemed an aggressor through its union with Serbia and suffering the effects of United Nations sanctions.

But after holiday-home buyers hailed Croatia as the 'next big thing' in 2004, it was not long before attention turned to its cheaper neighbour to the south, whose border lies ten miles from Dubrovnik airport.

British and Russian developers began exploiting this tiny nation's real-estate potential, and its emergence featured in property programmes such as Channel 4's One Year To Pay Off Your Mortgage.

What it lacks in size - it's no bigger than East Anglia, with a population of 670,000 - it makes up for in natural beauty, including stunning beaches along its 180-mile Adriatic coastline, seemingly impenetrable mountain ranges and historic towns. Today, it's a year-round home to about 300 British citizens.

But it was never entirely unknown. The mini-island hotel of Sveti Stefan in President Tito's time was visited by movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Kirk Douglas. More recently, supermodel Claudia Schiffer has holidayed there.

Next month easyJet resumes flights to Dubrovnik, which is served all year by BA and Flybe from Birmingham, and a fair number of passengers will head south to Montenegro, which split from Serbia in 2006.

Serbian speaking, Orthodox and with a far more casual view of government than Croatia, Montenegro experienced a mini property boom between 2006 and 2008, when prices doubled.

Like elsewhere in Europe, Montenegro has its share of halffinished building sites as the recession grips, but construction has not ground to a complete halt.

'There are some unfinished apartment buildings, but that's always been the case - projects are often started with minimum thought regarding financing the entire build,' says Matt Lane, 36, a former software development manager, who has been living in Montenegro with his partner Amy, 38, since 2005.

'But lots of properties are also being finished.' Matt's holiday business offers kayaking trips around the country's coast and rivers and he also runs property development company Blenheim Consulting (www.blenheimconsulting.com).

'There's nowhere like Montenegro for the range of scenery and opportunities,' he says.

'In early spring, there can be several feet of snow in the mountains, just 20 minutes' drive away, yet it is warm enough for the beach.' Home for Matt, Amy and their daughter Grace, two, is a twobedroom villa in the northern hilltop village of Suscepan, with expansive views of the deep-blue Adriatic below.

The house is on the market for €150,000 (£132,000) as the couple, who are expecting another baby, want to build a bigger home with rentable apartments.

Montenegro remains one of the poorest nations in the region and its infrastructure is in need of improvement. But modernisation is underway, thanks to European Union funding, with £26.5million spent on building a mains water and sewerage system down the entire coastline.

Another couple similarly charmed by Montenegro are former IT technician Steve Boyton- Jennings, 48, and his wife Denise, 38, a human resources manager.

They sold their three-bedroom house in Watford to move to Montenegro in May 2006 with plans to open a naturist resort - the former Yugoslavia having been a haven for Europe's nudists since the Fifties.

With a £200,000 budget, they bought a two-acre plot for €100,000 (£88,400), close to the Croatian border and Dubrovnik airport. Against a backdrop of the Orijen Massif Mountains, it has sweeping views of the Sutorina Valley.

But their vision to build timber cabins for their naturist clientele suffered a fatal blow last Christmas when the government announced plans for the Montenegrin section of the Adriatic Highway, which will link Greece with the rest of Europe.

'The proposed route cuts right through our land,' says Denise, who was reduced to tears when she heard the news.

'Building our resort was going to be an expensive project, so the risk of compulsory purchase orders and having everything pulled down was too great,' says Steve.

They have scaled down their plans to open the Club Full Monte in August (www.full-monte.com), an eco-friendly, clothing-optional campsite on the same plot.

Despite news of the six-lane highway, Steve and Denise, who rent a three-bedroom property overlooking picturesque Boka Bay in the northern town of Herceg Novi, remain upbeat about their future.

'The road will be fantastic news for Montenegro, even if it means our campsite lasts only a decade.

'The irony of our eco-camp eventually being prime land for un-eco things like roads and petrol stations isn't lost on us,' says Steve.

He feels that tumbling property values - between 20 and 50 per cent in some cases - will simply return house prices to a more realistic level.

Jelena Cvjetkovic, of Savills Montenegro (www.savmontenegro.com), acknowledges that some prices have dropped by as much as half.

Andrea Marston, of Montenegro Prospects (www.montenegroprospects.com), says there isn't a pattern to which areas or types of properties have reduced the most.

'Some sellers, including British people who bought three years ago when the euro was weak against sterling, can afford to drop prices significantly and still come out on top,' he says.

Marston is marketing the Jaz apartments, three miles from the coastal town of Budva, with two-bedroom penthouses going for €110,000 (£97,300), and one-bedroom apartments for €60,000 (£53,000).

'They were double that last year, but the Canadian developer wants to sell and move on.'

She is also selling a £220,000 two-bedroom frontline apartment in Dobrota, close to Kotor, which last year was priced at £398,000

Roger Weiss - I AM FLESH [Art]

Human bodies have long been photographed and described. Many have been seen and read about. And every community, through its institutions and leaders, has always espoused certain body-types and shunned others. Showing off the desirable ones, and hiding the undesirable. All those who might be perceived as excessive or upsetting.

Roger Weiss, donning the role of a visual ethnographer, involves himself in every body-type of contemporary society. Almost adopting a “naturalistic” approach, he isn’t scared to get his hands dirty. To breathe somebody else’s breath. Accepting that our own images are never fully under control. Rather, he allows them a certain margin, opening up ever-changing and unlooked for perceptions. And with project 35, he invites us to continually switch between the general and the particular, setting in motion a systematic alternation between interior and exterior. He undermines the comforting idea of an established aesthetic of anatomy and takes us on a journey of the body that turns its revelations of intimacy into an exercise of democracy.

The essence of human rights, a key element for any society to call itself democratic, is that the autonomy of the individual rests on the inviolability of the human body. The body, that in past ages was in the hands of God and the ruler. In war, sent to the slaughterhouse by the generals. In the fields and in the factories, abused and deceived by the cheating bosses. Today, instead, our bodies belong to us. Admittedly, even under democracy, politics retain some control over our bodies. Always ready to regulate, to forbid and to issue permits. And yet, political control struggles with bodies reluctant to hand over control of their own fate. There are plenty of scenarios for control – and plenty of dilemmas – from procreation to living wills.

One of these scenarios relates to the expressive materialization of the self in the appearance of the body, in the visible identity of the individual. This is the drift of Roger Weiss’ argument.

As phenomenology shows, if the self exists in the world via the body, it can be experienced in two different ways: objectively and a subjectively. Bodies that by their functioning test the limits of their own reality. Shards of the drama of the human condition. In daily life, the body is the self, the dwelling place of my feelings, where I move, the frame for my perspectives. And I can even adopt a perspective of examining my own body. But there are innumerable social occasions where a separation exists between the self and the body. Medical discourse, for example, with its ability to turn a person into a patient. Or, at its most extreme, into a corpse. On which one can operate without any resistance. But even then, the self remains, as it were, trapped. Because not only do I have a body, I am a body.

And, today, living as we do in a body-crazed society, individuals are always being called on to “work on” or “look after” their bodies. And if individuals know what they can do – within certain limits – with their own bodies, the problem remains what to do with this freedom, because the body expresses an established rapport with the surrounding world. Thus becoming an existential option. A topical theme for contemporary democracies.

Roger Weiss’ photographs are life forms that speak by means of the body and not about the body. They relate setbacks and aspirations, weaknesses and strengths, pain and joy. Of rights achieved and rights trodden down. The flesh that exposes itself, calls for others’ perception. Obliging these perceptions to pause on its appearance.

A place where the self and the world intermingle and relegate the realm of ideas to second place in order to deal with the realm of the visible. The inner self, usually held back as opaque and inaccessible, becomes open and displayed on the skin. So, it’s not about somebody else’s body that conceals a self. Rather, it’s about bodies that reveal a self. And, being able to follow every fold, it is possible to feel emotions that become stories. Moments that become history. The photographer, just as he enlarges faces, expands the feelings experienced. In other words, he enables us to “reach within”, putting people in touch with themselves and others.

And thus, these oversize photographs rub up against us, creating the friction that is typical of the human encounter. Every body, though forming and representing defined individuality, is turned outside itself, and is set in a relationship. Not an absorbing empathy but rather an invitation to live a relationship of differences. In which reciprocal differences are a pre-condition for understanding. That is project 35; that is what democracy should be about!
